How to get the best shave by Gillette

When it comes to looking your best, nothing beats a great shave, and Gillette knows how to make the cut. Check out these essential tips on shaving techniques, skin care regimens and the right tools for the job.

Against the grain

Should you shave with the grain or against the grain (ATG)? It's one of the most common questions asked about shaving. To determine the direction of your hair growth, rub your hand or a credit card across your face; if you encounter resistance, the direction of hair growth is ATG.

Many say you should avoid irritation by shaving in the direction your hair grows. For some men, however, this might not result in a sufficiently close or smooth shave. If your beard is tough, first ensure you hydrate your skin for at least three minutes (ideally during a hot shower), as this can reduce the force required to cut hair by up to 70 percent. Also, make sure to use a quality shave gel like Gillette® Fusion® ProGlide™ Sensitive Shave Gel to soften hair and help defend your skin against nicks and cuts so your razor can comfortably glide for an incredibly close shave. Try shaving with the grain first, and then ATG if necessary. Reapplying shave prep before going ATG can also help.

Exfoliation refers to the removal of dead skin cells, leaving behind the smoother skin underneath. One way to exfoliate is to use a facial scrub, which can buff away oil, dirt and dead skin cells—and subsequently mat down facial hair and block your razor's path. But did you know that shaving can also exfoliate dry skin?

After exfoliating with a wash like the Fusion® ProSeries® Thermal Facial Scrub, shave your face and rinse with cool water to close pores and soothe the skin. Then, pat your face dry and apply a lightweight aftershave moisturizer like the Gillette® Fusion® ProSeries® Intense Cooling Lotion.

Wet shaving

Wet shaving means shaving with water and a manual razor. Dry beards can be as tough as copper wire, but with proper hydration, beard hair becomes softer and easier to cut. Therefore, shaving with water is absolutely essential for a closer, smoother and more comfortable shave.

Soak your facial hair with warm water for a full three minutes (ideally during a hot shower) and use a hydrating shaving gel like Gillette® Fusion® ProGlide™ Sensitive Shave Gel to soften hair while protecting your skin against painful nicks and cuts. Finish off your shave by rinsing with cold water to close pores and replenish your skin with a hydrating aftershave balm or lotion like the Gillette® Fusion® ProSeries® Intense Cooling Lotion.

Body grooming

It used to be that only swimmers, bikers or models shaved their body hair. Did you know that in the U.S., about one-third of guys shave more than just their face? Maybe you want to clean up some hair on your neck or chest or somewhere else. Whether you do it for the look, the feel or for your partner, today's clean-cut look can extend to other parts than the face.

From trimming to clean shaving, there are many options, and the best fit for you depends on what part of your body you want to groom and the look you're trying to achieve. No matter what kind of body styling you prefer, the Gillette® Fusion® ProGlide™ Styler is the perfect styling tool for face and body.

Head shaving

Whether you're looking for a solution to thinning hair or simply ready for a new look, shaving your head is a no-hassle way to look great. Get started by using hair clippers to trim your hair short. Then, achieve the rest of your new look by following these tips.

Hydrate your skin in the shower for several minutes to ensure that your hair is as pliable as possible. Use a good shave gel—not bar soap. Shave gel tends to be less drying than ordinary bar soap and water, and it won't clog your razor the way soap can. Shave gel prevents water from evaporating, while keeping the hair soft, resulting in smoother razor glide and less tugging of the hair.

For maximum control, Fusion® ProGlide™ Clear Shave Gel is a transparent, non-foaming shave gel that gives you a clear view of the hair you're shaving. A high-quality razor like the Fusion® ProGlide™ Power will give you a closer shave, extending the time between shaves. Shave with light, gentle strokes. Your razor should do the work—not you. Start shaving with the grain. Then, if necessary, go against the grain for an even closer shave. Start shaving from front to back, and then shave the sides of your scalp. Use a hand mirror and a wall-mounted mirror to get the best view of the back of your head. A post-shave facial moisturizer like Gillette® Fusion® ProSeries® Intense Cooling Lotion helps provide instant cooling relief for just-shaved skin and hydrates to improve moisture retention throughout the day.
